So you recognize that you (frequently) give criticism but can’t take it? Hmmmph…Here are some thoughtful, emotionally intelligent ways to respond to criticism — whether it’s personal or professional:
💭 1.
Pause Before Reacting
Take a breath. Criticism can trigger defensiveness, but pausing helps you respond thoughtfully rather than react emotionally.
Example:
“Thanks for sharing that — let me take a moment to think about what you’re saying.”
🗣️ 2.
Listen for Understanding
Focus on what is being said, not how it’s said. Try to find the core message, even if the delivery is harsh or clumsy.
Ask clarifying questions:
-
“Can you tell me more about what made you feel that way?”
-
“Can you give an example so I can understand better?”
❤️ 3.
Acknowledge What’s True
Even valid criticism can sting, but acknowledging it shows maturity and self-awareness.
Example:
“You’re right, I could’ve handled that better.”
or
“I see your point — that’s something I can improve.”
⚖️ 4.
Filter Out What’s Not Useful
Not all criticism is fair or accurate. Take what’s constructive and leave what’s not aligned with your values, goals, or identity.
Ask yourself:
-
“Is this coming from someone I respect or trust?”
-
“Does this feedback help me grow, or is it just noise?”
🌱 5.
Respond with Grace
Show gratitude and professionalism, even if the feedback is tough.
Example:
“I appreciate you taking the time to share that. I’ll reflect on it and make adjustments where needed.”
🧘🏾♀️ 6.
Reflect & Integrate
Later, privately reflect on how you felt, what was valid, and what you want to do differently. This step turns criticism into growth.
If you value the relationship, you will work on “you” first.
Be well,
